Elsie Begle Interview

Mrs. Elsie Begle is the widow of Edward G. Begle (1914-1978). In this interview Mrs. Begle discusses the educational background of herself and her husband, and her husband’s career in mathematics and mathematics education. Mrs. Begle recalls Edward Begle’s undergraduate student days at the University of Michigan with Raymond Wilder (a doctoral student of R. L. Moore) and his doctoral work at Princeton with Solomon Lefschetz. Much of the interview concerns her recollections of Edward Begle’s role as head of the School Mathematics Study Group, a notable mathematics education reform program during the “New Math” era.
